Baby quilt

This past week I began making Scalloped Edge Baby quilt by Kreative Kiwi

Been a new adventure for me from the traditional quilts. Each square is embroidered on the machine then sewn together matching the stitched pattern. Then backing and finally finish it all with in the ditch quilting.

This pattern has so many options, from square sizes, to how many squares, fabric color, thread color and even the filler squares can be personalized. Which I have done on this quilt, chose to replace the center with my grandsons full name.

I choose the largest square 10x10 so using my 8x8 hoop. What I really like is they include files so the border pieces can be done two at a time. In my 8x12 hoop, anything not to hoop so often.😏
Using tips I have learned by reading other blogs such as after hooping the interfacing place pins along edge to keep it from pulling in.
One I am lacking is to remember to trim the batting while changing bobbin for the fabric. Learning the hard way how important that is… trimming after has caused fabric cut basically having no seam allowance. Going to need a sticky note..

I added up all the squares I needed for all the animals, the saying and fillers. Cut all the interfacing, batting and fabric ahead of time.

With the animals one of the suggestions was to be stitched in color. Since the squares are white in white I thought this would add a little to the quilt over all. Also since my expected grand is a boy I accented the over all quilt with a blue border. Picked a fabric that reminds me of a beautiful clear blue sky, also has white stars all over. Like to blend not have dramatic contrast.
(As you can tell even by the tread color for James Matthew’s name)

For finishing I choose to go with a soft fleece for the backing (of course in a beautiful sky blue) without batting. Read several comments that said batting made it to fluffy. Figured it already has batting doesn’t need more weight and bulk. After the sandwich will finish with stitch in the ditch quilting.

It will be a couple months before I post the finish quilt… baby shower is Sept 1st.
